One of my students began Japanese studies with me at 13 years of age and continued for about 5 years. She was a beginner with a home schooling background who loved Anime, Manga and games. She took weekly lessons with 1-2 hours of homework per week.
For the first three months I did not teach her grammar, but instead had her practice sentence patterns. I prefer that students get a feeling of self-learning, as babies do in learning their native language. While she was with me her Japanese skills developed to an advanced level. She also learned Kanji, and 500 Chinese characters, each one having a story of its own. She loved learning and became like a native speaker with no trace of foreign accent. Before leaving for college she took the AP test for Japanese language and culture. She did not need any preparation for the test as a result of my lessons. She achieved a perfect score. We both were happy and proud of her success.
